Dapsone-induced methemoglobinemia: case of the blue lady.

چکیده
Methemoglobinemia is a life-threatening condition that can be difficult to diagnose. While methemoglobinemia can be congenital and should be considered in cyanotic infants,1 it is more often an adverse medication effect, most commonly related to dapsone use.2 As up to 1 in 9 emergency department visits in Canada might be owing to adverse medication effects, physicians and other health care providers should routinely consider the relationship between medications and atypical clinical symptoms.3 We describe the diagnosis and management of a patient with acquired methemoglobinemia as a result of dapsone use.

Methemoglobinemia caused by dapsone overdose: Which treatment is best?
Increase of methemoglobin level is named as methemoglobinemia characterized by functional anemia and tissue hypoxia. Methemoglobinemia can be congenital, but acquired form are more often caused by various drugs and toxins. Methylene blue is the most effective antidote for acquired methemoglobinemia. When methylene blue is not available, alternative treatments such as ascorbic acid and hyperbari...
متن کاملMethemoglobinemia--an Alternative Treatment Modality.
Methaemogloninemia is a rare condition characterized by elevated levels of methemoglobin levels. We report a case of a young lady who took thinner (a solvent used in paint). Methemoglobinemia was diagnosed on the basis of saturation gap and elevated methemoglobin levels. She recovered after exchange transfusion, which was done due to non-availability of parenteral methylene blue.

www.turner-white.com M ethemoglobin, a unique form of hemoglobin (Hb) with diminished oxygen affinity, is formed and metabolized roughly at equivalent rates under normal physiologic conditions. However, when methemoglobin generation supersedes compensatory physiologic reductive capacity, methemoglobinemia may result. Potential etiologies of methemoglobinemia include a variety of heritable metab...

Methaemoglobinaemia is a rare but potentially life-threatening hemoglobinopathy. It is characterized by cyanosis that is not responsive to oxygen therapy. We report a case of acute methaemoglobinaemia secondary to intentional dapsone overdose. A 34 year old lady presented to our institution with a history of sudden onset of dyspnoea. Her level of consciousness had reportedly deteriorated dramat...

INTRODUCTION We present a 51 year old, African American, female who presented with persistent hypoxemia. She had been taking dapsone for many years for prophylaxis against Pneumocystic Jiroveci with no symptoms but eventually developed methemoglobinemia only after a splenectomy. From our literature review there are no documented cases that have demonstrated this relationship between dapsone, sp...
